Copy Kitty – Review

This retro platformer is an interesting one. On the one hand it is well done but on the other I just found it kind of dull. You are a young cat creature named Boki that has the power to copy the abilities of the enemies you kill. Bouncing balls, flaming shards, mines, and many other abilities are dropped from the various creatures you’ll come across as you progress. You may carry three different weapons at at time, though you need to be careful as you can replace a weapon with something less effective. A fun aspect of the game is that you can combine your powers for a much more powerful, sometimes screen clearing effect. Besides the power ups you do have a basic shot that deals minimal damage and a kick attack that can break through some walls and deal a bit of damage as a last resort. There is a second playable character named Savant that plays quite differently than Boki. Savant can only have two powers and how they function are unique. He places a window on the screen that his powers come from and the order he selects them can change how they act. He also flies around the map instead of walking and jumping like Boki does. The default controls in the game are a bit difficult to get a handle on off the start though they are adjustable and if you do play I would recommend adjusting them to suit you better. I found fairly often using he default set up that I would hit the wrong key or not be able to find the button I wanted.

Bunny bots and plants

The art style of the game is solidly in the classic 16 bit platformer style right down to the 4:3 aspect ratio, with some nice modern flashes for various power effects. Many of the creatures are quite cute with some silly things like sheep robots and other oddities. Boki and Savant have nice styles to them as well with Boki looking like the youth she’s supposed to be and Savant in his suit and top hat. The variety of abilities you get through the game have a wide variety of looks to them as well so your screen will constantly be blowing up with colours. The levels have different styles to them as you progress including underwater areas and jungle type backdrops. The music and sounds also throw back to the old 16 bit style which some may enjoy but I found the music irritating and turned it off. The sounds as well are fairly basic and found little to be excited about and I turned them way down as well.

Finishing a level with Savant

All things told this is not a bad game but it’s not great either. The story is simple the graphics and sound ok and the gameplay just felt like something was missing. I never got that feeling of having fun so much as just passing time. If you do find yourself enjoying this offering though it does have a fair amount of replay value as you can play through with both characters and it does have a higher difficulty level. Also you can try and beat previous high scores on subsequent runs.
