EXTINCTION REVIEW

EXTINCTION REVIEW

0
Extinction has now been released (as of 04/10/18) and I’ll start by saying, I had a chance to dive into this game a few days before release and leading up to the release, I’ve heard very little. That being said, I have zero expectations and in this case I don’t think having no expectations was a bad thing. At first glance you are met with vibrant colors, cool looking protagonist and of course Giant Orcs! (and small ones too). I opted not to try any tutorials and rather just feel the game out as it seemed as a simple enough hack and slash. One thing I noticed by doing that is, how much Extinction felt like so many other games of this style that I played before. Undecided on whether or not this strong sense of familiarity was a bad thing, I pressed on. Playing through act one and two, I encountered zero CGI cut scenes; which I thought was odd considering the trailer and alleged hype surrounding this game. At first I thought the concept of defending villagers, saving the city and killing baddies all while increasing your rep sounded appealing but that’s all extinction is. Repetitive cities, repetitive objectives, and repetitive opposition; which doesn’t mean you can’t have fun, admittedly the time you play before it gets boring due to repetition and lack of engagement can be rather enjoyable, like a light version of Shadows of Colossus fused with Shadow of Mordor. When I say “light” I mean that in looks only, the controls for Extinction leave much to desire in both response and player capabilities. You wont get the fantastic combat of a Shadows of Mordor or a amazing spectacle of a giant; but you will get a lot of slow motion slicing and zipping around in the air. So far I’ve played Extinction for four hours and have not completed it, do not feel compelled to but wont uninstall it. Why? killing giants is fun and I’m sure I’ll have an urge to do so sometime in the future for 10 or 15 minutes. With that being said, please check out some of my play through that I recorded if you are undecided about the game or just want to sink your teeth into more content:   Conclusion: Extinction has a good idea but feels like a unfinished, underfunded game that just misses the mark on something that could have been great. Extinction also retails for $74.99 CDN, which is entirely outrageous for what you get in a game. Cut scenes are just pictures of the people talking with the character reading said dialog. Repetition is something that plagues this game to its core making replay value extremely low if you beat the game and have other games on the go.  I cannot recommend that you spend your hard earned money on a game of this caliber at the price that it is currently being sold, I would wait for this game to be significantly discounted before considering purchasing.
