DualSense, the New Wireless Game Controller for PlayStation 5

Haptic Feedback

The DualSense controller for the PS5 has kept most of its form and function as it’s beloved predecessor, the DualShock 4. The style is mostly similar, and though it appears to be larger and more bulky, the DualSense has a stylized curvy look that we really like. The haptic feedback that will be standard in every controller has the ability to heighten that feeling of immersion while gaming. As PS5 blog puts it, “adopted haptic feedback adds a variety of powerful sensations you’ll feel when you play, such as slow grittiness of driving a car through mud. We also incorporated adaptive triggers into the L2 and R2 buttons of DualSense so you can truly feel the tension of your actions, like when drawing a bow to shoot an arrow.” Sony has also been in constant communication with game developers with consideration to haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. The expectation will be that most games will include some form of stimulus that prompts the dual senses.

The Controller

Once again, the new design will take into account the new features of the controller. With the added hardware of both the haptic feedback and the internal microphone, the controller will be slightly larger, and heavier than the DualShock from PS4. Hence why Sony has chosen a sleek design and rounded curves, while accentuating the touchpad helps to minimize it’s large appearance. The angles of the hand triggers have also been slightly modified to better suit the position of the hardware underneath, and to make it easier to enjoy the adaptive triggers. Sony has also taken thoughtful consideration into ways of maintaining a strong battery life for DualSense’s rechargeable battery, and to lessen the weight of the controller as much as possible as new features were added.     There will no longer be a share button, however the PS5 controller will not loose its fan favorited social aspect, as the share button has been replaced by a “create” button instead. The idea with the “create” button is to merge the sharing button with the ability to edit and create unique videos and pictures before sharing them, though Sony has been relatively quiet on the matter promising more details to come. Lastly, DualSense has added in a built in microphone array, which “will enable players to easily chat with friends without a headset – ideal for jumping into a quick conversation.” However, Sony suggests having a proper microphone ready for anything more than a quick chat!
