Is EA Being a Bully?

For years now, people have had negative comments and concerns towards EA and how they operate. Trying to take over and dominating the video game industry by buying out companies, smothering them, and in the end they get crushed. Back in 2005 Pandemic merged with Bioware creating the company VG Holding Corp, becoming a top contender in the video game industry. Breaking down walls and advancing games into what we know and love. In the minds of people at EA, they didn’t want to contend with anyone. In 2007 EA ended up snooping around and purchased the companies for the total amount of $870 Million. With that amount of money, Bioware closed down, but Pandemic continued for another two years. They released two games in the following years, but ultimately ended up shutting down due to the fact the games just weren’t up to the great standards from previous games. They had games in production as well but knew in the end that it just wouldn’t work out. Westwood studios was another famous company that produced great titles like The Lion King, on the Super Nintendo, Monopoly, and a game that I played for house which is Command and Conquer. In 1998 it was estimated that Westwood had a 5 – 6% grab on the PC gaming market. Well that’s when EA started sniffing around again! Knowing that they could get more money, they threw more money at Westwood studios and purchased the company from their parent company Virgin for $122 Million. After the closing of Westwood most of the staff went on their way. It is also said that most of the Westwood upper management aren’t even working in their major fields anymore. All of the below companies had fallen due to EA purchasing them and having the same results everytime.
  • Origin 1983-2004
  • Westwood Studios 1985-2003
  • Dice 1992-2004
  • Criteriongames 1993-2004
  • Maxis 1987-2004
  • BullFrog 1987-2004
  • Bioware 1995-2007
  • Mythic Entertainment 1995-2009
  • Black Box 1998-2011
  • LucasArts 1982-2013
  • Viseral 1998-2017
  • Pandemic 1998-2009
Every company listed tried to produce more games after they were purchased but always released a lower quality game then before they were bought. In my eyes I see EA as being a bully and just wanting most of the companies so that they can produce cookie cutter games. Nothing is better then making a newer version of a game that did well in the past but might not do so well with a remake in present day. Let me know what you think of EA buying these companies and them closing. Keep on gaming everyone!
