MediEvil Review

A spooky Playstation classic returns from the grave. Back from 1998, when platformers were starting to stretch there legs MediEvil gets a remake and a whole new look with upgraded sound and graphics.  The 2019 version is developed by Other Ocean Emeryville and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.  The developers did a very good job recreating this game from the level design to the soundtrack, everything is a blast from the past… literally. This game starts in 1286. The Kingdom of Gallowmere is threatened by a Sorcerer named Zarok, who hates his fellow man and uses magic to raise his own demon army and take over the kingdom for himself. You play as Sir Daniel Fortesque, The Kings Champion of Gallowmere. Stories of Gallowmere say Dan led a militia against Zarok and his army, slaying the horde and though mortally wounded was able to take down the evil sorcerer. Going down in the History books as the Hero of Gallowmere and peace lasted for 100 years… Until Zarok returns. In the opening scenes, you see Zarok in a cave above Gallowmere plotting his next attack from a spell book. Then casts his evil spell over Gallowmere raising the dead, Even Sir Daniel.   The first thing I noticed about this game was the colourful new look, while still keeping the dark spooky feel.  Adding more detailed visuals and a farther draw distance, new backgrounds and scenes were created. The FMV sequences feel like an animated movie. I love seeing that in games today. The first game (1998) was critiqued harshly on the clunky controls and weird camera changes. This time around the controls are much better. The camera angles can be annoying, but it feels like the developers wanted to be that accurate when remaking MediEvil. Combat can be challenging at first. Some enemies hit hard and take a lot of health. There is no health regeneration, even between levels. Collecting health bottles is the only way to revive yourself if you lose all your health. A strategic balance of offence and defense is the best play style. Button mashing will get you killed. . Shields and clubs have durability and will eventually break when used enough. Unlock throwing knives and a cross-bow for ranged attacks. Which adds to the intense combat.  As you progress, You will unlock different weapons from ranged, melee, to higher tiered weapons from the hall of heroes that you can unlock by killing every enemy in a level then collect the hidden chalice. Collecting multiple chalices is key to unlocking that next high powered items. Collecting all the chalices  even unlocks a different ending.   The map starts with tutorial levels, then eventually branching out with multiple paths to take. Even returning to completed levels to open secret areas or collect loot you missed.  Sir Dan will encounter Gargoyle statues along the path to defeat Zarok. One acts as a guide or hints to the game, the other is a shop where Sir Dan can buy ammo with his gold. Each level has gargoyles. Stock up on arrows, throwing knives, spears, and recharge magic lightning bolts. Even recover stolen items that enemy imps can steal from you if your not careful. If they get away with your loot because you cant get it back until you see those gargoyles. There are a number of collectibles to get that unlock different things like dragon armour or a gold shield. Great for completionist gamers.   MediEvil is not exactly a linear game. Getting all the collectibles is a satisfying feat.  Some levels require you unlock specific equipment the get to those hidden areas to get those unlockables back in previous areas. But at the same time, this game can be finished in a week. Around 10-15 hours depending if your just going for story or all collectibles. If you’ve played MediEvil before its worth checking out. There is even something for new players.  The HD graphics and the classic gameplay, its easy to jump into and the story is addicting and goofy enough for all ages.  Check this title out for the holiday season.
