In a video presentation, Nintendo has confirmed that Steve—the avatar character from Minecraft—has been confirmed to be joining the fight in Super Smash Brothers Ultimate. Director Masahiro Sakurai has also confirmed that a video presentation detailing how Steve will function in Smash is scheduled for October 3.
While viewers don’t know how Steve will fight, we can see in the reveal trailer that Steve will be making use of the more simplistic animations that Minecraft is known for. Other iconic Minecraft staples making their way into Steve’s kit are swords, TNT blocks, minecarts, and weapon construction. Steve also won’t be the only one making his way to the world of Super Smash Brothers. Alex, Zombies, and the Enderman will all make appearances as alternate costumes.
After the reveal trailer, Sakurai detailed just how he and Nintendo go about handling character selection. Nintendo has said that when it comes to character choice, Sakurai can turn it down if he doesn’t believe it to be possible. Minecraft in Smash, however, was deemed a plausible feat. Though one that would require work on each and every stage to accommodate Steve’s ability to place blocks on the stage.
