The World Ends with You Has a Sequel on the Way

It’s been a long thirteen years since the release of the cult classic The World Ends with You on the Nintendo DS. Now fans are on the horizon of the long-awaited sequel to this title coming in the summer of 2021. Neo: The World Ends with You will follow a new group of four teens trapped in the reapers game, fighting for their lives.  While the title is a sequel, it appears the title has very little to do with the first World Ends with You, instead choosing to bring a new cast together for a new reapers game in the familiar setting of Shibuya. That is except for the return of a previous reaper, Sho Minamimoto, who served as an obstacle in the original title for Neku. While retaining the original title’s signature art style, Neo: The World Ends with You is rendered entirely in 3D with a cell-shaded style similar to Jet Set Radio or Persona 5 Royal. Despite the initial trailer being in Japanese, we were able to pick up a few key tidbits from our viewing. The trailer begins by saying, “Welcome, Sheeple of Shibuya,” before announcing that the reapers game has begun anew. The story this time around features themes of complacency with a phrase such as “sheeple” being used, referring to humans acting like a herd of sheep would. The gameplay has also seen a bit of an overhaul, bringing back the partner-pin system from the original while taking place on a complete 3D place as players will need to dodge around enemies to survive Neo: The World Ends with You is set to drop in summer of 2021 on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4.
