Gameplay

With significant improvements to its mechanics, RPM technology takes the octagon by storm in UFC 4. Real Player Motion Technology has been implemented in UFC 4’s clinch control system, and the player will notice the changes instantaneously. EA creates a highly fluid altercation between the fighters, making the gameplay feel more realistic. RPM technology improves core gameplay elements in UFC 4, and aside from the clinch overhaul, RPM technology has improved fighter takedown mechanics. With various new takedown mechanics implemented in UFC 4, players will feel that player controls and fighter attributes entirely drive most outcomes. The satisfaction of outmaneuvering your opponent and performing an all-new driving takedown will give players a sense of power after their opponent’s stamina meter crumble.

The new submission system in UFC 4 has received a complete overhaul. The system is determined by your player’s position when you are about to lock in a submission, and one of two mini-games will make an appearance on screen. The new mini-games are offered to players to make the submission game easier to perform. Players will also be able to use striking controls to strike while in position or use a series of wrestling techniques to slam their way out of the submission.

With improvements to the clinch and submission aspects of UFC 4, the game does have a minor setback with the ground and pound mechanics. With enhancements to simplify ground maneuvers, the ground and pound feel sluggish and daunting as your opponent drives you to the mat. Additionally, the new control scheme is straightforward to use but leaves you wondering at times why your opponent out-triggered you to advance their fighter to the sequence they chose.

Career Goals

UFC 4 Career Mode

Where UFC 4 shines is with its new and improved career mode. When you start career mode, you are taken under the wing of a former UFC fighter named Coach Davis. As you navigate through the career mode, Davis helps you build your fighter, introducing you to extensive training and sparring sessions. This helps make your character’s arsenal to help during your up-and-coming bouts. In UFC 4’s career mode, you are in total control of any outcome, whether choosing your fights or declining, or knocking out a well-known UFC fighter during a sparring session to create a massive rivalry. Relationship building in UFC 4 helps learn new and exciting move-sets and is a great way to get noticed by creating rivalries with fighters. Everything in career mode is entirely in the player’s control, and no two fighters’ journeys will ever be the same.

UFC 4 Career Menu

Player customization is easy to navigate with several new looks for your fighter. As you continue to conquer career mode, more and more items will become available to customize, which is easily accessible on your career mode menu tab. When choosing your fighter’s discipline, a key feature in career mode is that every punch, kick, or takedown your fighter dishes out will shape your skills-set. Skills will increase as you continue to use them, and any attribute linked directly to your discipline will grow quicker. UFC 4’s career mode is exciting for existing fans or new ones just checking out their first UFC game.

Game Modes

With career mode being the highlight of UFC 4’s game modes, there are still a few more options to play. You can quickly jump into a fight by choosing the war now option, and with over 200 UFC fighters to choose from, you can create any super bout you can make. Knockout mode offers a traditional fighting game style to the mix. You have a single health bar, and both you and your opponent try and deplete health bars to land the final KO. Stand & Bag offers fighters a chance to duke it out while not allowing players to use takedowns and work the ground game. Clinch control, punches, and kicks are the only hope you have at defeating your opponent.

Change of Scenery

From the hard-knock streets of the city to the famous Octagon, UFC 4 has incorporated its traditional venues into the game and offers fans an even more excellent experience. With new and exciting media, players can choose several new places to challenge opponents. You can channel your inner Frank Dux and take your opponent on in the Kumite arena, or if you prefer a sunny backyard to show off your MMA skills, UFC 4 has that venue for you. If you are a fan of the UFC contender series, you can also show off your skills at the UFC Apex arena. Players can swap between venues during the fight via the options tab.

It’s Time!

It’s never easy creating a fluid and impressive MMA fighting game like EA has done with UFC 4. Building off the vast overhauls in the previous installment UFC 4 keeps those improvements front and center and continues to evolve the series with improvements noticeable to new and die-hard fans of the UFC franchise.

As EA Sports continues to drive this franchise to the top, UFC 4 offers a wide range of game modes to keep fans engaged for the long haul. With an overhauled Career Mode that shines quite brightly, UFC 4 takes players on a journey from rags to riches as your created fighter becomes potentially the best. Additional game modes like Knockout Mode and new fighting environments like the underground Kumite arena are brilliant and add much-needed flair to UFC 4. If you are a new fan or an existing octagon veteran, you don’t want to miss out on this fantastic installment to the UFC franchise.
