SIE Announces New Acquisition and Family Member to the PlayStation Family

Earlier today, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced in a surprise blog post that they have acquired Housemarque Oy (“Housemarque”), the long-time developer partner of SIE.

The company provided an update on the PlayStation Blog to detail the recent acquisition and highlight the success of the Finnish developer:

“With a proven track record of creating original games that feature best-in-class gameplay, Housemarque is a highly-accomplished studio and we couldn’t be more thrilled to officially welcome them to the PlayStation Studios family,”

– Hermen Hulst, Head of PlayStation Studios.

Housemarque is best known for its smaller titles, such as Nex Machine, Alienation, and most recently, Returnal. With the success of their latest title, Housemarque is officially the 13th studio to join PlayStation’s family of catered talent.

Perhaps in a more interesting turn of events, however, is the small misstep that came out of Sony Japan’s Twitter account. Released shortly after the Housemarque announcement, Sony Japan Tweeted out an image that congratulated Bluepoint Games on being acquired by PlayStation.

Bluepoint Games has worked with Sony in the past on numerous remakes and smaller titles for the PlayStation brand. Recently, the studio developed the hugely successful Demon’s Souls Remake for the PS5. An acquisition of Bluepoint Games would not be surprising given the relationship between the developer and console manufacturer, nonetheless it would provide another vital studio to the platform’s arsenal.

From a young age I've loved video games and the power they possess in bringing different kinds of people together. I have forged many good friendships through this medium that would not exist without it. I love experiencing a new genre for the first time and finding out it resonates with me. Also, Conker's Bad Fur Day is one of the greatest games of all time. Fight me.
