Sisters Royale: Five Sisters Under Fire Review – Love is War

Sometimes the best way to set up a narrative is with a simple premise, allowing players to jump into the action without thinking too hard. Sisters Royale: Five Sisters Under Fire is a vertical-scrolling shoot ’em up that starts with an incredibly straightforward premise: five sisters fighting over who gets to marry the angel at the end. The game opens with a brief, but well thought out, explanation of the current status of the world and the context of the game before jumping directly into the action. Upon reaching the character selection screen, players are asked to choose one of the five protagonists: Sonay, Selma, Ece, Nur, and Lale.  Each sister has their own unique style, both when it comes to artwork and combat ability.  Upon choosing a character, players can expect five distinct rounds of combat, each with its own boss.

A New Experience

What Sisters Royale does differently from other shoot ‘em ups is the existence of varying play-styles. Instead of a uniform fire pattern, each character has a unique fire pattern. Speed and score, however, is determined by how close the player is to danger. This speed differential is shown via an aura around the character sprite, shining bright red when dangerously close to a projectile. Players have the option to use bombs that will clear the screen of enemies and projectiles, and each character has their own magic power. If playing as Selma, for example, she can summon ice blades that rotate according to the current position of the left stick.  Players will notice that each character brings a different style of play, with some characters resulting in an easier experience than others. If players find the game too easy, they can make adjustments within the options menu to things such as projectile speed and size.

Left to be Desired

While Sisters Royale has a lot going for it, it has some downfalls as well. Most notably, the game is very short in the grand scheme of things and can be completed in about 40 min. The title’s replayability relies on playing the game on its higher difficulties, along with attempts to beat previous scores.  Similar to many arcade-style games, Sisters Royale offers a continuation option for players who lose all of their lives. A player may continue this way as many times as they would like to, however for those looking for a challenge this pretty much eliminates the consequences of death. For players looking for an easy distraction, this feature might prove quite useful. Sisters Royale: Five Sisters Under Fire is an enjoyable experience that can easily be played for hours on end with very little frustration.  A game like this should be enjoyed for what it is, a shoot ‘em up with style.  The consistent onslaught of projectiles, coupled with each character’s unique play-style, results in a well-executed game with potential for replayability.  Sisters Royale: Five Sisters Under Fire was reviewed on Xbox One. I enjoy long walks on the beach, followed by copious hours spent inside avoiding the sunlight. All kidding aside, as a creative person I am constantly on the lookout for an experience when I play games. I have been gaming since I could form memories and I have a preference for games with a good narrative. That being the case, Writers Mind in Halo: Reach holds a special place in my heart.
