Luckily, northern countries are still rather safe, if you don’t mind the occasional radioactive dust storms, scarce resources, and other Outlanders – who can sometimes be unpredictable. You play as an Outlander scavenging for materials to survive.  The point is to loot. shoot and survive all while trying to escape with enough materials to build and upgrade your shelter. The game has a Day-Z feel to it. It feels old school while still bringing new style of game play. Which is no surprise since Bohemia Interactive Developed Vigor, as well helped out with Day-Z. Vigor is an online survival game. Mainly gun combat and looting. The game starts off with a tutorial showing the basics of looting and using your maps to navigate and get to areas as well as air drops coming in which can give you some of the better quality loot. Once this is completed, you get access to your shelter and inside you can do a lot of upgrades that visually change your shelter but also give you gameplay benefits during encounters. Also you can craft weapons, ammo, upgrade equipment, change clothing, access the store, matchmaking and even a shooting range.   Every load out you create before a match needs to be planned, or else risk losing valuable equipment. If you die during an encounter, you lose your inventory. Decisions like being equipped for raiding the airdrop means guns, ammo and health.  While a quick scavenging run may only need a small weapon to get in and out quick. Some of your shelters upgrades require specific materials like nails and the only way to get them is by looting.  There is nothing wrong with a quick supply run for a nice upgrade.     There are 6 different maps or encounters to choose from and each one has a different feel to it and every time you go in the weather may be slightly different to mix things up.  In one map you may be going over the grassy hills in Yale Canton or in another the fog of Buttery Drought. You can also bring a friend or teammate along to help you with each encounter, but solo works really well in Vigor. 8-12 players in a match and lots to explore, you have to spend time looting buildings, vehicles and potentially airdrops. Airdrops come in after a certain amount of time and tend to have good loot or weapons in them. The idea in Vigor is that you must get all the loot you can and then get out alive. When you want to escape you must reach an exit point and these are dotted around the map. Get to that point and a countdown timer starts and at zero, you are evacuated back to your shelter.  When looting regular items you can stay under the radar quite well. Or if you want a more direct approach against other Outlanders, you can kill them and take there loot as well.  After a long time passes in a match, radiation will start moving into the level like a closing circle, so there is a time restraint that will make the player feel rushed.   There is a way that you can guarantee your loot isn’t lost and this is an in-game currency called crowns. These crowns can be used when in a social lobby to buy boosters, for a better chance for high quality loot you find, to earning better crates after a round or insurance to protect your load out from death.  The more players ante up there crowns for loot, the better the loot quality will become. You can find a small amount of crowns in airdrops or buy them with real money. The game isn’t without issues though. Climbing and vaulting animations seem a bit rough sometimes. Obstacles you think you would be able to get over seemingly doesn’t let you or its a long delay after you try to climb up. Also some connectivity issues and some lag. I don’t know if it was early issues or servers problems. The environments look amazing especially looking out on to horizons and seeing all the detail put into the landscapes. At the end of the day though, visuals don’t make a great game and game play does.   As for replay ability, the cool concept of the game is to go on encounters and collect resources and you have 6 areas that you can travel to which are quite different and of course you’ve got the shelter upgrades too. The further into the shelter upgrades you get the longer each upgrade takes and they take forever to grind out. It really comes down to if you can get use to the gun battles.  And the gun play is a lot of fun. There are not a lot of games like this out there on the Xbox so its actually good to see something that has a little more longevity  when it comes to bottle royal type games. Especially because this game is free to play and its fun solo and coop. Vigor builds a tense feeling while playing and Xbox players should definitely check this title out. If you play it, let me know what you think!!!!
