What I Want for Zelda’s 35th Anniversary

What I Want for Zelda’s 35th Anniversary

0
The Legend of Zelda is a franchise close to my heart so, I wanted to discuss the ways I’d have Nintendo celebrate it. On September 3rd, Nintendo held a video presentation for the 35th anniversary of the Super Mario series. Showcasing what the company had in store for celebrating this milestone in Mario’s history. This included a large volume of classic Super Mario games made available through the Nintendo Switch Online Service, numerous Mario themed events in titles such as Splatoon 2 and Super Mario Maker 2, and even a collection of Mario’s greatest 3-D adventures being ported to the Nintendo Switch. As a fan of Super Mario, I was more than a little excited seeing all the amazing ways Nintendo was going to be celebrating one of my favorite game series. However, this is what got me thinking about a certain other Nintendo series that will also be celebrating its 35th anniversary next year. The Legend of Zelda is a franchise that needs no introduction. Spawning some absolutely fantastic titles that have shaped the way developers create puzzle-adventure games. It’s one of my personal favorite game series and thus, the prospect of Nintendo putting as much effort into celebrating this momentous occasion in Zelda’s history is more than a little enticing. That anticipation is what motivated this discussion; detailing just what exactly I think Nintendo needs to do to make The Legend of Zelda’s 35th anniversary a special one.

Collection of The Legend of Zelda’s Best

The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask

Nintendo is no stranger to putting out collections of games for the anniversaries of their properties. Of course, there is the Super Mario 3-D All-Stars Collection releasing September 18th. However, let’s not forget the Kirby Dream Collection, released to celebrate Kirby’s 20th anniversary. Bearing that in mind, I believe it’s fairly likely we’ll be seeing a collection of ports of past Zelda titles for the series’ 35th anniversary. As far as what titles Nintendo would include, I’d want them to follow in Mario’s footsteps and put out a Zelda 3-D collection. Containing the remasters of the Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, The Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess. These are some of the most unique, impactful, and loved titles in the Zelda series. Majora’s Mask is my personal favorite and the ability to play it on the switch, alongside all these other incredible titles, would make for one amazing collection the case of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, Nintendo already has high definition ports to work with, given their re-releases on the Nintendo Wii U.

A New Remaster

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds - Plugged In

The Legend of Zelda A Link Between Worlds

With the prospect of Breath of the Wild 2 coming out at some point within the next year or so, I don’t think we’re very likely to see another full-blown remake of a Zelda title in the same vein as The Legend of Zelda Link’s Awakening, I do believe that a separate remaster of a Zelda title is entirely in the realm of possibility. Now, I’m going to go against the majority opinion here, and say I’d actually rather see the Legend of Zelda a Link Between Worlds receive a remaster on the switch as opposed to Skyward Sword.  This isn’t to do with any disdain for Skyward Sword, I actually quite like the game. However, I believe it’d be better to appeal to all sectors of the Zelda fanbase as opposed to just acknowledging the 3-D titles. A Link Between Worlds is a fantastic and criminally underappreciated title in the top-down Zelda series, that would make for the perfect title to remaster for Nintendo Switch.

Other in Game Events

New games aren’t the only way I’d like to see Nintendo celebrate The Legend of Zelda. A Zelda themed splatfest would be a great start. “Navi vs Fi” or “Bows vs Boomerangs” could be some exciting themes to base a splatfest around. Super Mario Maker 2 could feature some new stages with a Zelda twist or even a world map filled with Zelda themed levels.  There are other titles that could receive Zelda themed content such as Super Smash Bros Ultimate. I don’t see DLC for any Zelda titles currently on the switch as very likely but, there is the new Hyrule Warriors game, so they may do some downloadable content for it.

The Legend of Zelda 30th Aniversary Music Collection

The last major set of items I’d love to see Nintendo commission for Zelda’s 35th anniversary would be any number of physical apparel. Statues of Link, clothing, pins, and any other types of memorabilia would be an absolute dream come true. Some of these could even be earned through the ‘My Nintendo’ membership account, similar to how missions are being handled for the Super Mario franchise. This may be a pipe dream, but an album dedicated to the magnificent musical arrangements for the Legend of Zelda would be an amazing product to celebrate this milestone.  The Legend of Zelda is one of Nintendo’s biggest franchises and means very much to me. If Nintendo did even half of the things I listed here, I’d be absolutely ecstatic. Personally, I’d most want to see a collection of 3-D Zelda titles or the remaster of A Link Between Worlds.
